Toys And Its Impact On Children And Their Performance Of...

Toys play an important role in childhood development as children learn roles and skills from playing. As a result, the toys children are subjected to have an affect on which roles, interests, and skills are learned and practiced. Through Lego’s product Duplo, I will demonstrate the influence particular gendered toys have on children and their performance of traditional gender roles. Gender, which is a learned performance, is something society has been taught from a very early age and toy advertising has played a significant role in reinforcing the performance. One tradition that is reinforced and naturalized by society is the ideology of a male dominated society, representing strong characteristics of heterosexuality and masculinity; also known as hegemonic masculinity. Therefore, using Ideological Criticism, I will analyze how through the branding and design of Lego’s Duplo toys, children have been constructed to do gender differently, ultimately perpetuating and rein forcing hegemonic masculinity. Lego’s Duplo Series Context Billund, Denmark in the early 1900s. In the small village of Billund, Denmark, Ole Kirk Kristiansen began building his dream of toy manufacturing in a woodworking shop. Within this shop, the first Lego toys of wooden ducks, planes, and trucks were created. Soon after, the Lego name, stemming from the Danish word â€Å"Legt Godt† was developed. Male Domination in A MIdsummer Nights Dream Essay - 956 Words

Male Domination in A MIdsummer Nights Dream Male Domination For many centuries women have been oppressed, and treated like second-class citizens. Over the years, women have earned more rights and have been recognized as equals to men. Although they have earned many things, there are still some signs of them being oppressed by societies that are still mainly dominated by men. The period when Queen Elizabeth was ruling over England was no different. She was a big supporter of William Shakespeare and his acting company. Hippolyta thinks that everything is moving too fast and wants time to think about the marriage. To Theseus Hippolyta is a prize that he won in battle and she is his to control. Hippolyta was pulled from her life as Queen of the Amazons, one that she probably ruled and had say of what she did. Hippolyta is now forced into a life where she has no say over one thing that happens to her. She is now going to be controlled by a man and have no power whatsoever. Although Hippolyta was a woman of great power, she is now reduced to a possession, and is owned by a man who can do with whatever he wants. Egeus is controlling his daughter, Hermia, and would rather see her die than go against what he wants. Hermia and Lysander are in love, and want to be married. Structure And Corporate Financing Decisions -Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: Discuss About The Structure And Corporate Financing Decisions? Answer: Introduction The most important decision that is made within a company in the quest to maximize its value is usually the decision on which products to manufacture and / or which services to offer, however, the decision on how to finance the investments in those assets that allow offering such products and / or services (eg in machines and equipment), is often seen as a minor or secondary decision (Miglo, n.d.). This paper intends to emphasize the importance that financial decisions can have on the value of a company, without forgetting that the expected results will depend considerably on the assumptions that are made about the capital markets and the agents that operate in these markets. The capital structure of a business is the combination of debt and capital that an organization uses to Capital structure of Aveo in the past 5 years It is time to review how the capital structure of a firm behaves in the presence of taxes. To that end, we will continue to use the theoretical framework that Modigliani and Miller developed in his article: The Cost of Capital, Corporation Finance and the Theory of Investment published in 1958 (Bena and Hanousek, 2006). With a very strong balance sheet, the investors look at various things in the balance sheet to invest in the company. There are two measurements for evaluating a companys strength. The first one is the capital structure and the second is the working capital of the company. Aveo has had a very good performance in terms of asset performance of the company and therefore has had good runnings with the investors. For purposes of the report, we shall analyze the company structure of Aveo Ltd for the last five consecutive years (Agarwal, 2013). For capitalization, the company has a record of long-term and short term structures of capital which are permanent in the long term and are a combination of debt and of equity. Aveo has most likely concentrated on keeping a healthy record of equity as opposed to capital debt of the company. This is a clear indication that the company is financially healthy as the yardstick for debt to equity ratio of any company according to IFRS and IAS is 1:1. Aveo ltd equity comprises of preferred stocks and retained earnings which are the inputs of shareholders equity on the balance sheet account. Aveo equates its debt with its liabilities; however, there is a major difference between operational liabilities and the debt liabilities. The difference is that debt liability forms the capitalization component of a company capital structure. Short term and long term debt form the debt component of a company (Martin and Baker, 2013). Short term debts mostly comprise notes payable. The golden rule is that long term debt should take up two third of the total debt figure according to the prudent principle in accounting. Short term will take the remainder. 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 Total debt/Shareholder equity 2574/701.8=3.7:1 2183/669.6=3.16:1 1840/853.2=2.16:1 1887.2/918.4=2.0:1 2428.5/1072=2.2:1 The analysis in the figures above indicate that the debt to equity ratio in the five years have been very high. While the recommended yardstick of debt to equity ratio is 1:1, Aveo ltd remains to have a high ratio in terms of debt to equity ratio. In the year 2012, the debt to equity ratio was 3.7:1 which was 3 times higher than the recommended threshold. This is not optimal at all. In 2013, the ratio dropped albeit marginally to 3.2: 1 as well as in the year 2014. This was an improvement in terms of financial management despite being high for the accounting standards. In the financial year ended 2015, it dropped to 2.0:1, although not optimal, it seems the company had put in place measures to tame the high debt to equity ratio. This shows that the liquidity of a company is improving (Brown, Liang and Weisbenner, 2006). This is also the case in 2016 where the debt to equity ratio was 2.2: 1. This shows that in all the 5 financial years the debt to equity ratio exceed the yardstick an d this is not good for the investors in Aveo ltd. Optimum capital structure The assumption in prudence use of leverage or debt is that the management can earn more on borrowed money to the amount of interest and fees expense paid on these funds.If a company in a highly competitive environment, is hobbled by high debt , the company may find its competitors taking advantage of the problems facing the company to grab more market share. But if there are taxes, is the irrelevance of the capital structure maintained? To answer this question, let us imagine that the cash flow (FC) of a company is similar to a pie. That cash flow, brought to present value with the appropriate discount rate, will give us the value of the firm. In a taxed world, a company without debt would have a CF like this: (Brown, Liang and Weisbenner, 2006) Dividend history and policy The financial value of the company, that is, the value of the shares, can be expressed as the current equivalent of the expected dividend stream, valued at the required return (ke): The model is based on the reasonable assumption that the dividend is the principal source of shareholder remuneration but, please note, it does not pre-empt that it should be immediately recognized: all dividends expected over the investment horizon are included, as well as the price which is expected to be able to sell the T share; retained earnings will revert to future dividends and also to terminal value because reinvestment will cause the company to grow at a rate g = ROE (1 - pay out). 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 Dividend paid (in millions) 21.1 17.7 - - - Arguments in favor of investing in companies that do not distribute dividends (Chen, 2005) In Aveo Ltd, the company cannot afford to be capitalized by distributing their dividends to the shareholders because of their investment need. Reinvestment is done in bid not to fall behind their competitors and to give the shareholders maximum value in terms of shareholders value for the future. In many cases, the company like Aveo will sell its shares in order to have a tax advantage where dividends are subject to the IRPF. Arguments in favor of the distribution of dividends This is the other side of the coin, where shareholders can sketch a smile every three months. The perspective from this position is totally different from the previous one, where it is preferred that the money earned with the contributions made by the shareholders be returned to them, since in a certain way these benefits belong to them. In this way the shareholder has the freedom to choose what to do with the liquidity obtained. Pay-out Another fact that we usually take into accounting when we intend to invest in a company that distributes dividend is the Pay-out. This is the part of profits that the company destines to dividends, so it will always be advisable to take it into account since, depending on the situation in which the company is, more or less dividends will be distributed. Where are the profits of companies that do not distribute dividends invested? The profits that the company obtains and are not destined to the distribution of dividends do not have a specific destiny, each company makes the most appropriate decision as to where it has to invest this money, although usually this destination is usually the same for all the companies7. For example: to ensure greater liquidity, to have a working fund to help us in a difficult situation, etc. But we must also take into account that there are shareholders who have deposited their trust and money in the company so that it can carry out its activities, so the reward to these shareholders has to come from a part of the profits (Graham, n.d.) Dividend history for the past 5 years The quality of dividends distributed is directly proportional to the quality of financial reports produced. The dividend structure is commensurate to the profits received for the company. Aveo ltd has not paid out dividends for the last three years. In fact the last dividend paid was in the year 2013, the debt to equity ratio has also reduced in those years. Aveo ltd has not paid out dividends for the last three years, and its debt equity ratio has reduced in those three years (Vandekerckhove, 2012). This report discusses the impact of dividend payments on company value, whose maximization, remember, is the financial objective. Modigliani and Miller demonstrated that, under certain conditions, shareholders should be indifferent between the payment of dividends and the capitalization of results; however, some companies have turned this pay into an essential element of their relationship with investors. Others, on the other hand, maintain a systematic policy of reinvestment, without their actions being penalized by investors. Know the complete process that must be followed to make successful decisions in Financial Investments. Dividend distribution Problems in individual decision-making are mainly due to two causes of fear of decision making and thoughtless decision-making (Vandekerckhove, 2012).Attractiveness of Aveo Australia ltd to an investor Aveo is a very attractive company to invest in. it has had its fair share of troubles especially in dividend payout but remains a very attractive company for investors nonetheless. The dividend policy, and its broader expression as a self-financing policy, is closely related to both the financial structure and the investment decisions. Retained earnings are a source of financing that, depending on the preferences of the company and its owners, can make growth possible by supplementing or supplementing debt or other sources of self-financing, such as capital increases. Self-financing is, in fact, the preferred source for many R D-intensive companies, and / or latent opportunities (Graham, n.d.). Regarding how dividends are canceled Brealey and Myers point out: The dividend is fixed by the company's board of directors. The announcement states that payment will be made to all shareholders who are registered on a certain closing date. Later, about two weeks later, dividend checks are se nt to shareholders. Dividends can only be declared by the board of directors, which then has the authority to order the payment of a dividend. If the directors or board of directors decide to declare a dividend, they must take appropriate measures to pay the members at a certain date (Vandekerckhove, 2012). Aveo ltd profitability levels are high showing that investors can be attracted by the levels of profit that the company is having. Although attractiveness of a company can be measured using different yardsticks, profitability, liquidity and the companys general stability remains the key areas of focus for the investors outlook (Graham, n.d.). According to this approach, the shareholder's profitability in any period t is the sum of the dividend yield and the profitability accrued by the change in the value of the shares: so that the model does not establish any express priority between dividends and retention. This result has some logic, because the value of the company's asset is the current equivalent of free cash flow, discounted to the weighted average cost of capital, and neither of these two variables depends on the distribution policy (maintaining the presumption that the decision involves a trade-off between paid dividends and new capital) Nor does it pre-judge that both profits (dividends and capital gains) are strictly equivalent: in fact they are not, because the latter are subject to risk, hence a financial valuation and a discount rate with risk. Accordingly, in a first approximation the effect of the dividend policy on the value of the enterprise will depend on the future impact of the retained earnings: to the extent that the incremental result provided by the domestic reinvestment offsets the risk and the time (preference for liquidity), shareholders will be willing to waive their current dividends in exchange for future (incremental) dividends. Conclusion Aveo is a good company to invest in. It is clear, that the cash flow of the business, will be shared by the shareholders and the State. Then, the present value of what is left to the shareholder, would be the value of the company, or otherwise seen, Vu = E, where Vu is the value of a deleveraged company and E is the equity (Vandekerckhove, 2012). Pullman Porters Essays - Pullman Company, Pullman Porter

Pullman Porters Rachel Bates BLS 340 Movie Reaction Movie #1 Miles of Smiles, Years of Struggle This movie was about the Pullman Porters, which worked on the trains. In this time of history traveling by trains was very popular for people. The train industry made a large amount of money off of people traveling from city to city town-to-town by trains. This period in history was known as the age of steam. Along with people traveling their had to be someone their to take their bags, serve them and assist them in their travel. These people were known as Pullman Porters. This job was a highly respectable job because it gave that person a certain status within their families, friends and the travelers. Mostly African Americans performed this job. Mrs. Rosina Tucker, the wife of an ex-Pullman Porte, narrated the movie. She discussed the trails, and tribulations that these men had to go through. When working as a Pullman Porter, these men were trusted with the belongings of the travelers. Mostly the travelers were white people who still had the racist mentality but for som reason they figured if these black men were educated enough to be Porters, then they could trust them just a little. These Porters were paid low wages and worked for tips. During these years blacks had to do a lot of smiling and Uncle Tomming to just get appreciated by these white travelers. Not just that but whites had the superiority feeling towards blacks. That was right up their ally to have blacks taking their luggage, shinning their shoes, saying yes sir, yes mam and so on. So after a long time of being mistreated paid poorly and discriminated against blacks were fed up. As Pullmans they were not in the union nor had any other benefits that whites had. So as a result the Pullmans organized a brother hood amongst the Pullmans so the train industry. The brotherhoods was dedicated and believed in what they were trying to do. The brotherhood set the foundation for organizing in America. They started to fight against the labor laws in search for equality among the Pullman workers. Beauty and Women essays

Beauty and Women essays Since the beginning of man and through the rise and fall of many different civilizations there have been differences of opinion on what makes someone beautiful, or more importantly what characteristics of women are attractive to men. The answer to this question is perhaps the billion-dollar question. I say this because the answer to this question is sought by women every day through billions and billions of dollars of plastic surgery, beauty products, and stylish clothing. Put simply, the main question that I am discussing is, are there some things that all women have in common that makes them attractive to men? This question arises from the fact that although I, as a man, do have preferences in personality and appearance in looking for a mate. I can still find things about all women that are attractive to me, Whether it is an aspect of their personality or something physical, like nice eyes. It is this habit of most of the men I know to look for the good in girls that make me wonder what exactly makes women in general beautiful? Before any of this can be seriously thought of though, we must first consider the concept of beauty in relation to women. The question here is of course, is our concept of beauty innate or is it defined by our own individual tastes shaped by life experiences? Thinking along these lines, we must go all the way back through history to ancient Greece and Plato, who wrote in The Symposium: And the true order of going, or being led by another, to the things of love, is to begin from the beauties of earth and mount upwards for the sake of that other beauty, using these as steps only, and from one going on to two, and from two to all fair forms, and from fair forms to fair practices, and from fair practices to fair notions, until from fair notions he arrives at the notion of absolute beauty, and at last knows what the essence of beauty is (Solomon, 652). So basically to Plato there was one great...

Word Clipping Word Clipping Word Clipping By Maeve Maddox Shortened forms of words like rhinoceros (rhino), synchronization (sync), and limousine (limo), common in conversation and informal writing, are usually used in their entirety in formal contexts. These shortened words are called clippings. Sometimes a clipping drives out its longer original and becomes a standard word in its own right. Some standard English words that began as clippings are: taxi: a shortening of Taximeter, a device for measuring distance and figuring the fare. cab: a shortening of cabriolet, a light two-wheeled chaise drawn by one horse. Later the word was applied to a motorized vehicle. Note: The word taxi-cab combines two clippings. lunch: a shortening of luncheon, a word documented from 1580. Although lunch is documented as early as 1829, it was still considered to be vulgar a century later. Luncheon is still around, but it has acquired something of a precious connotation. bus: a shortening of omnibus. Classical Latin omnibus means â€Å"for all.† As a term for a public transportation vehicle, omnibus was borrowed from French. The wealthier classes had enjoyed the services of carriages for hire as early as the 17th century. The omnibus offered inexpensive public transportation to the masses. plane: a shortening of aeroplane/airplane. Words are clipped from front, back, or both ends. Back clipping Most clippings keep the front part of the word, dropping the remaining syllables: chimpanzee > chimp synchronize > sync examination > exam gasoline > gas memorandum > memo Some clippings change the spelling of the first syllable in order to keep the desired pronunciation. For example, the shortening of business is spelled biz because severed from business, the syllable bus is pronounced like the word for the vehicle. The shortened form mike for microphone has been in the language since 1911. Beginning in the 1960s, the use of the abbreviation â€Å"mic† on electronic devices began to be confused with the word mike. As an abbreviation under an audio port, â€Å"mic† is a useful space-saver. It fails as a spelling, however, because mic rhymes with Bic. Fore-clipping Some shortenings drop the beginning of the word: robot > bot parachute > chute cockroach > roach telephone > phone Middle Clipping In middle clipping the middle of the word is retained: refrigerator > fridge influenza > flu pajamas > jammies Only time will tell which of the current shortened words so popular in social media will stick to the language. Here are some linguistic terms related to word formation by clipping: apocope [uh-POK-uh-pee]: The cutting off or omission of the last letter or syllable/s of a word: pic from picture, vocab from vocabulary. apheresis [a-fuh-REE-sis]: omission of one or more sounds or letters from the beginning of a word: possum from opossum. syncope [SEENK-uh-pee]: contraction of a word by omission of one or more syllables or letters in the middle, like ma’m from madam, specs from spectacles, and fo’c’sle for forecastle. Citizens bank Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Citizens bank - Essay Example The researcher states that the strategic problem that the Citizens bank is facing is followed by an important tactical problem: up to then, in 2004, the organization has used acquisitions as a tool for promoting growth. Acquisitions, as developed through the years, led, necessarily, to the radical transformation of organizational structure: in 1992 the employees of the organization were estimated to just 1,300 while in 2004 the firm’s staff reached the ‘24,000 people across the  USA’. It was at this point that the tactic of the organization to proceed to acquisitions led to concerns. Larry Fish, the CEO of the firm identified the particular issue; it was clear that for the future the terms of acquisitions in which the organization would proceed should change. At the same time, Fish had to face another problem: Citizens Group was no more a bank of average size; it has become a major competitor in the US banking industry. Thus, the practices used up to then for se curing the firm’s image in the market should be reviewed. It has become clear that the firm was facing a tactical problem: the rate of acquisitions of other banks/ financial institutions have become so rapid that the organization’s mission and values could be doubted, as of their feasibility. The firm’s CEO would have to resolve a series of issues related to the above practice. From 1992, up to the acquisition of Charter One, the organization’s growth has been gradual.

Robert smalls the life of a slave man to ccongressman Term Paper

Robert smalls the life of a slave man to ccongressman - Term Paper Example This is because it proved to the entire society that even African Americans are able of making good leadership. Despite the fact that he is no more, Smalls is still a national hero. Robert Smalls was born on 5 April 1839 in South Carolina at a home where his mother was working as a slave for the white Native Americans (Wikipedia.org par. 1). The fact that his mother was a slave means that he was born into slavery, something that he grew up into. What is surprising is that his father who has since remained anonymous was a white American who is thought to have forced his mother into sexual intercourse because of her slavery at the time. Like his mother, smalls were also forced to work as a slave boy in the white settlements, something which he did until the age of twelve, after which he decided to seek for a paying job in Charleston (Kennedy 27). Since Smalls had no good education and the fact that jobs were being discriminatively awarded, he managed to get employed as a laborer (Miller 4). Despite the poor, working condition, which he had to work in, Smalls were determined to get some money, which he could use to help his enslaved mother who had been rendered destitute by slavery. The condition of the job was that out of all the earnings Smalls received from the job he was only allowed to save a dollar while the rest of his earning belonged to his master. Barclay reveals that by the time Smalls turned eighteen years old he decided to strike a deal with his employer, who accepted Smalls to send him fifteen dollars every month, as opposed to the earlier deal in which Small had to take only one dollar and hand over the rest (Par. 3). This deal enabled Smalls to save much money than he did initially. It is also here in Charleston that Smalls met Hannah, whom she married on 24 December 1856. Barclay notes that, at the time of Sm alls’ marriage, he was barely seventeen years old while his wife

Comanche People :: essays papers

Comanche People In the western part of Oklahoma, ranging south on the Plains, a courageous people, known as the Comanches, roamed. They were a nomadic people who lived in skin teepees, which were easily moved from place to place. They had strong friends among Indians, such as the Kiowas and Apaches, as well as many enemies. This is only a minute view into the Comanche tribe, however. Before learning about the tribe's history, one must learn first, who the Comanche people were, and then who they are now. Where did the name Comanche originate? What are characteristics of these people? How is the tribal system organized? These are questions that must be answered in order to learn more about the tribe. In order to fully comprehend their past, one must look to their background and then to their present history. So, put on your anthropological hat, and explore the lives of the Comanche. It has been said that the origin of the name Comanche is a contradiction of the Spanish tern camion ancho, meaning literally, the broad trail. This term refers to the broad range traveled by the warriors of this tribe on their trading and war expeditions. First applied to the tribe soon after 1700, the name Comanche is spelled mjany different ways, such as Camanche, Commanche, or Cumanche. The Comanche Indians call themselves Nerm, meaning, people of people. The Comanche are from the Shoshonean linguistic family. This linguistic family developed in the Shoshoni and Snake River regions of Wyoming and Idaho. The linguistic stock is also said to have been of Nahuatl origin in Mexico and remotely related to the Aztec. They are the only division of the Shoshonean family who left their haunts in the Rock Mountains and established themselves on the Plains as one of the great tribes of the region. They later became divided in as many as twelve different bands. The most prominent band in the history of Oklahoma are the Penateka, meaning honey eaters, and the Quahadi, meaning antelopes. In Oklahoma, as early as 1869, the total population of Comanche was estimated at 2,538. During other periods the Comanche numbered 1,399 is 1880, 1,553 in 1898, 1,476 in 1910, 1,718 is 1924, and 2,700 is 1950. Texas, on the other hand, reported that in 1851, the Comanche population totaled 20,000.

How to integrate computers into the curriculum Essay

Computer technology has become an integral part of every individual’s life. The advent of computers and their explosive use in practically every field has jolted the human race into what experts call the informational revolution (Veneris, 1984). In the current era, information ahs become so important and central to a business, it has occupied its true place as a resource rather than a by product of business operations. With the current society now headed towards what Drucker (n. d.) claims to be the next information revolution, it is only imperative that we train our future generations in this field like we do in any other subject that is considered to be vital by societal standards such as language, mathematics, general science etc. Being a fairly new field of study when compared to other courses of a curriculum, IT and such are constantly changing due to the technological leaps made everyday. A thing invented today becomes obsolete a month later. Skeptics argued that the technological bubble has burst; leaving in its wake many people broke who invested in dot com companies. This might be true but only to the extent where the boom in the jobs market is not as exponential as it used to be. If we look at the new products that come on market shelves every fifteen days or so, it will be proof enough for the fact that technology has never seen a better time than this before. And this creates problems when one tries to incorporate IT in school curricula. It becomes hard for schools to keep up with the ace of technology and many schools fail to fully equip their students with the skill set needed to compete effectively in the new world. Schools usually pose some questions regarding the matter such as: ? Can computer applications help improve student performance in basic skills and other key areas? ? For what specific skill areas, grade levels, and content areas are computer applications most effective? ? Which kinds and levels of students seem to profit most from using computers to learn? ? Which kinds of computer applications are most effective for which skill and content areas? ? Can computer applications improve students’ attitudes toward school, learning, and their abilities to learn? ? Will improved attitudes translate into better performance in school? These are in fact the key points that they should address and try to achieve the answers to when designing their course strategies. Guidelines to consider are: ? Grade and intellectual level of students ? Scope of subject ? Updating with external sources ? Type of instructor (industry experience or not) These are the most important factors that an institution should consider while designing the curriculum. The appropriate software too is important to compliment the overall course structure. The software to be used should be decided upon: ? User friendliness of software ? Degree of specialization ? Subject area (programming, multimedia etc. ) ? Skill level of students The hardware should be one that can support the requirement of the software. For example an application by Adobe such as the Adobe reader requires a minimum of a Pentium 2 but windows XP requires a minimum of a Pentium 3 processor to function. Hardware requirements are usually best when taken from the software vendor. One thing to note is that students should be exposed to as man types of hardware as they would come across in the corporate environment ranging from keyboards, printers to graphics tablets. A Literary Hero Of William Shakespeare s Othello

â€Å"Houston, we have a problem!† Hopefully in my own space exploration project we will not need to utter that infamous phrase. This trip is extremely dangerous, and it is not definite that we should ever return to Earth, our goal is to find proof of alien life. I am responsible for choosing my own compatriots that I feel would be the beneficial to my mission. To join me on my journey I am taking with me three very different people, all with a varying set of strengths. First, I chose Beowulf to accompany me due to his strong leadership and monster-killing qualities. Then, I decided I needed someone to serve as Beowulf’s second in command, the perfect candidate for this position would definitely be Sir Gawain, a chivalrous knight of King Arthur’s Round Table. For my third companion I am going to take Shakespeare’s character of Desdemona, from Othello. Beowulf stands alone as the definition of a literary hero. Beowulf is not only a well respected king to hi s subjects, but is also a national hero for the neighboring kingdom of Denmark. Once Beowulf makes a commitment, like he has for this voyage, he stands by it, even if it costs him his life. Beowulf will be an asset because of his strong convictions. Beowulf will serve as the leader of our expedition. The Main Elements Of Society For Aristotle And Plato

Provence Barnouin 10/14/16 Prof. Hittinger Contemporary Civilization: Idea Paper 1 Households (or families) are one of the key elements of society for both Aristotle and Plato. Family is the first form in society of association between men as it answers man’s natural needs, and instincts. As Aristotle explains, the coupling â€Å"which necessity gives rise [to] is that between those who are unable to exist without one another,† in other words man is a being that is, by nature, social and political. Association is a natural phenomenon, which declines in interdependent forms such as the family, the village, and finally the city. However, it would be an error to assume that each form is not fundamentally different from one another. In Politics, Aristotle criticizes Plato’s assumption that a city must strive to be a unit, because â€Å"beyond a certain point, city will be reduced to family and family to individual.† [Book II, 1261a] Indeed, if a city state were to strive towards unity it would resemble a household, since he holds the househo ld to be of higher degree in unity, but by assumption, a city state is different that a household. By uncovering and comparing the differences between the city and the household in Politics, Ethics and The Republic, we will first explain Aristotle’s criticism and Plato’s potential response to his student. This will lead us to understand the relationship between the city state and the household and explain whether the family is a naturalShow MoreRelatedComparing Aristotle and Plato Essays1325 Words   |  6 PagesComparing Aristotle and Plato Aristotle argues that in order for a polis to emerge, a union between man and women must convene. The coalition governments, that is the cabinet of a parliamentary government, of various countries have come up with statutory reforms in order to protect the interest of both these parties. One of these reforms includes the Public Interest Defence reform, which protects journalists from libel actions when the information they have presented is in the public interest. This branch of journalism has been subject to several criticisms, however despite its controversial grounds, it stands strong due its important contributions in relation to public interest. Introduction Investigative Journalism has been a growing branch of journalism in the past and has had considerable influence on people’s mindsets and the media culture. It is a nature of reporting news in which a journalist focuses on a particular personality, business or phenomena and digs deep into its root, in order to bring out serious issues to the public’s eye. The only difference in this kind of reporting is that the people who are connected to the issue are not taken consent of and are often harmed in the process. Investigative Journalism makes available private and confidential information which is guarded with secrecy for public scrutiny. Libel actions are taking against ‘†a publication without justification or lawful excuse which is calculated to injure the reputation of another by exposing him to hatred, contempt or ridicule† (Parke, B. in Parmiter v. Coupland 1840). This paper talks about Investigative Journalism, in context of libel actions and the c onsequences of such law suits. It also talks about different Coalition governments, and their stance on Investigative Journalism as well as the reforms they have introduced, including the Public Interest Defence Reform 1998 which was passed to protect the rights of the reporters. Body The nature of Investigative journalism is inherently controversial and has been received with considerable disapproval by the people who have become its victims. When One’s personal life or organization is attacked by an investigative journalist, they can lawfully take a libel action, mostly libel actions are taken when there is a threat to one’s own or one’s organization’s reputation. Though the requirements of a libel action vary from country to country, mostly the plaintiff must prove that the statement was made to a third party, that the statement was a direct reference to the plaintiff and that the statement was slanderous before filing a libel action. Investigative reporters have some rights and can sometimes successfully avoid the consequences of these libel actions. The main ways are to justify their information as being truthful and actually. They can also exercise their right of Qualified Privilege which is given to a person, who has the authority to give out certain information without being liable of defamation. English law is one of the most reformed and well-enforced law systems which is followed by various countries. After various libel actions were filed, which involved a close battle between freedom of expression of reporters and the right to privacy of the defamed, the Public Interest Disclosure Act, was passed by the Parliament of the United Kingdom in 1998. This act protects such reporters from a negative treatment by their employer or any individual. It was passed to protect employees who disclose information, which is confidential but is of interest to the general public. This act has been very useful in protecting reporters who carry out risky investigative journalism to bring to light, issues that are in the public interest . Such cases have been very prevalent, for instant in the case, Reynolds v Times Newspapers [2001] 2 AC 127, the â€Å"public interest† defense was used, and â€Å"the Supreme Court unanimously reversed the decision of the Court of Appeal† deciding that Reynolds’s defense was true to public interest and involved media’s freedom of expression. However, the Act has been criticized, as it has been a considerable deterrent on part of the employers, who can neither penalize nor discipline employees, who disclose confidential information and for failing to provide security to the reporters, if a libel action is filed against them. Many constitutions have followed this legislation, the constitution of Canada too enforced Public Interest Defense, stating in Security of Information Act (R.S.C., 1985, c. O-5) that ‘No person is guilty of an offence under section 13 or 14 if the public interest in the disclosure outweighs the public interest in non-disclosure. The weighing of ‘public interest’ against one’s defamation, is a very subjective decision and can vary case to case, thus one can not rely on a jury to objectively give out a decision as to what is of more value. Thus, this legislation has its own limitations, and can at times fail to help the reporters against a libel action. On the other hand the journalist of the developing countries are not even privileged enough to go through a law suit in order to fight for their own rights and neither are the defamed people or organizations, because of a weak law and order enforcement. Despite strict laws, the government of such countries fails to keep the security of the investigative reporters into account and also the libel action cases take several years to complete and a lot of money has to be spent. The reporters are often mistreated by the large organizations or powerful personalities and even face life threats. Such are the implications of investigative journalism; it is a complicated branch of journalism with many repercussions and unpleasant consequences but has its own advantages and uses. Conclusion Investigative journalism has had a considerable effect on the media and the lives of other people. In the third world countries have to risk their lives and face a lot of threats due to the nature of this reporting and often their government fails to provide them any protection. While their law system is weak and the libel actions that are taken, take several years to be proved and thus the victims of their defamation take other ways to threat these reporters. In Developed countries, the law and order is strong and thus these reporters are protected, however libel actions are processed with great care and thus can cost heavy fines and loss of career for these reporters, who are merely carrying out their job or following their employer’s orders. Investigative journalism, thus, can be very costly, whether it is the cost of the journalist’s career or the cost of the plaintiff’s reputation or even the material costs that one faces during or after the judgment is pass ed. Assessing the Influence of Business Education on the Solvency of Small

Question: Discuss about the influence and the impact of the business education on the solvency of small and medium enterprises in Victoria. Answer: Business Research Topic I want to study about the influence and the impact of the business education on the solvency of small and medium enterprises in Victoria. There are lots of small and medium enterprises in Victoria. The initial research suggests that the business education can help the small and mid organizations to grow and develop. Literature Review Small and medium enterprises hold a significant place in Australia. SMEs not only offer employment to over 10% of the Australian adult population but also, provides the economies goods and services as well as a major contributor to both income and wealth creation. However, despite, this significant contribution, the Australian Bureau of Statistics in a recent report indicated that approximately 90, 000 SMEs deregistered from the economic market every year. Further, 75% of the SMEs, equating to nearly 67, 500 ventures failed to see their 5th year of operation. Several recent scholarly efforts have indicated that over 60% of owners and/ or proprietors of these fallen enterprises gave one basis for insolvency as being their inadequate business and management capabilities. Such capabilities included education levels, experience durations, formal and informal skills and market knowledge. Imperatively, this implied that a higher proportion of the SMEs insolvencies were evitable, had these proprietors or owners acquired the needed business knowledge, education, skill, expertise or support. Literature has it that enhancing business competencies and management skills allowed owners or proprietors identify blind spots occurring in the internal operational structure of some enterprises; to be identified and controlled. Therefore, this study pursued to assess the influence of having business education on the solvency of these SMEs. From the early years of the 20th century, scholarly and practitioner efforts, primarily relating to business structures and procedural management focused on enhancing the business managers understanding and knowledge. They aimed at realizing outcomes beneficial to business owners (shareholders) and staff (employees). The century nurtured the concept and realm of enterprise development emanating from the industrial revolution and the emergence of the Modern Industrial Capitalist (MIC) (Galbraith 2004, p. 1). The emphasis for this study lays with small and medium enterprises solvency. It will review the significance of business management education on SMEs solvency; giving focus to the perceived participants (education givers and business proprietors) requirements of the facilitating education givers and the perceived outcomes by the business proprietors. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) in their report ((ABS Cat. No. 8127.0 2011c) (2012) indicated that small and medium enterprises hold a significant place in Australia. SMEs not only offer employment to over 10% of the Australian adult population but also, provides the economies goods and services as well as a notable contributor to both income and wealth creation. The mere background elicits the need to investigate degree if any that management and business courses effects on SMEs solvency. Indeed, a primary motivation for the study remains to determine whether the higher incidence of SMEs emanated from a deficiency in business education. Research Questions The research project has five key questions. These questions can be discussed as: Do the various business management programs offered at Victoria-based higher learning institutions meet the competency-based needs of vocational education and training Do the various Victoria-based higher learning institutions offer SMEs business management programs that meet the various players needs Do the SMEs proprietors enrolled for education and management programs select vocational teaching and training competent courses At the end of the training, do the SMEs participants acquire significant general and specific personal and business competencies Do the various business and management teaching approaches by Victoria-based higher learning institutions contribute to enhancing SMEs solvency Research Methodology The research methodology would be a combination of primary and secondary research. Additionally, the study design will achieve knowledge transference suitable to SMEs proprietors/ owners as well as, offering improved education and management education by training. Gant Chart I plan to complete the research in the window of 14 weeks. The 14 weeks timelines or the Gant Chart can be shown as: Timelines: 2016 W-1 W-2 W-3 W-4 W-5 W-6 W-7 W-8 W-9 W-10 W-11 W-12 W-13 W-14 Background Study Concept Paper Research Area Finalied and supervision Research Questions Defined Literature Review Data Collection Data Analysis Report Preperation Final Research Report Research Process The research process would be a logical model in which that would have the various steps. The first step for the research process would be the research problem identification. The definite steps used in my research process can be discussed as: Step 1: Identify the topic for which I would do the research. I have already complete this step This is the phase where the broad area of research is defined. In this phase, the specific research questions are not formulated but the high-level research area is defined. Step 2: Define the specific research problem, research questions and research objectives This is the phase where the specific research questions are developed. In this phase, the high-level research area is broken down and the specific research questions for the study are formulated. Step 3: Do the literature review This is the phase where the existing literature on the subject is explored and the literature review is done. Step 4: Develop the research methodology This is the phase where the research methodology is defined and the primary and secondary research is done. Step 5: Data collection Data Analysis This is the phase in which data is collected and data analysis is done. In this phase, the statistics and mathematics equations are used to analyze the data. Step 6: Make report and presentation This is the report in which the report is made and report presentation is developed. Data Collection and Analysis: The data collection and analysis would be a key phase of my research project. I would use the existing studies and literature to collect the data. For data analysis, the tools like Microsoft Excel, SPSS would come useful. I would use business statistics and mathematical model to do data analysis. Expected Research Outcomes Resultantly, the study will be expected to expand the present body of literature relevant to solvency, particularly for SMEs in Australia. As well, it expects to derive significant relationships between business education programs, management skills with business solvency. Finally, based on the research findings the study will draw implications for interventions and further research. References: Australian Bureau of Statistics, (2012). Australian Bureau of Statistics. However, you can migrate your Wix RSS feed, so you wont have to manually recreate every post.To begin, Wix requires you to add an RSS button to your site before you can get to the specific URL. To do this, navigate to your Wix Editor, then go to Add Blog RSS Button:Go ahead and add the button to your page.Next, locate your RSS feed file by adding /feed.xml or /blog-feed.xml to the end of your website URL. The highest you can set this number to is 999, but this should be enough to help increase your efficiency.By clicking on Apply,  WordPress will reload the page to show 999 posts at one time. From there, you can select all of your posts on this page by ticking the All Items  checkbox, before selecting Edit from the Bulk Actions drop-down menu:This will bring up a screen with a list of all of the selected posts. Now, simply click the Update button for each one, and the Auto Upload Images plugin will update yo ur posts to include images from your Wix website.4. Convert your Wix pages to WordPressYour next step is to recreate each page from your Wix site on your new WordPress one. After youve published each page to your website, youre ready to work on your na vigation.5. Create your main navigation menuFinally, youll want to build a way for your visitors to easily navigate your website. To create a navigation menu, start by going to Appearance Menus within WordPress. Type in the name of your menu – which is just for your reference only – then click the Create Menu button:You can then select which pages you want to include by looking at the sidebar, selecting the posts and pages from each list, and clicking Add to Menu.
